UFC 209 was somewhat of a disappointment with the Khabib and Ferguson fight dropped as the co-main event due to Khabib being hospitalized. Also, the main event between Stephen Thompson and Tyron Woodley was mainly a five round feeling out process with a few action-packed moments sprinkled in between. However, there was some interesting BJJ to be gleaned from the competition.
First, the grappling prowess of Cynthia Calvillo was on full display in the women’s strawweight division. In a 1 round dominant display of grappling, check out this sweet scramble/reversal Cynthia hits from the Amanda double leg takedown.
She sinks in a anaconda choke hold while on the ground and masterfully transitions to the back from it in a display of flexibility and high level jiu jitsu.
While on Amanda’s back, Cynthia works for the rear naked choke. She was able to flatten her out, get the arm under the chin, and finish the submission. What an exciting fight in the women’s strawweight division.
The next highlight comes from the Iuri Alcantara versus Luke Sanders fight. Luke has Iuri hurt in the middle of the 2nd round. Iuri is in the turtle position as Luke lands punches to his head. In seemingly a move of desperation, Iuri rolls to a kneebar. Luke tries to defend but Iuri is already in deep and finishes the submission with a little less than 2 minutes left in the second round.
To summarize, the UFC fight results from the main card are as follows:
- Tyron Woodley def. Stephen Thompson, majority decision (48-47, 47-47, 48-47)
- David Teymur def. Lando Vannata, unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
